Regardless, it isn’t NPCs like Master Rahool who are out in the field, fighting by our side in this expansive Destiny universe. Bungie wants your companions in the game to be your real-life friends - though most of us usually end up playing the game with random people online who’re more likely to spam us with messages about how trash we are rather than sending us kudos for the one million damage we did in the last boss fight. The truth is, Destiny doesn’t expect you to form bonds with these characters the way you would in a BioWare game. And though many of these characters have extensive backstories for those who are willing to go looking for it, I’ve never felt attached to the Drifter or Lord Shaxx the way I am with Varric Tethras or Bastila Shan. Day in, day out, they’re in the same place, just waiting for you to come by and check their inventory. Most of the characters are just bounty depositories who repeat the same line every time you interact with them. But things in Destiny 2 are a bit different. Every time Garrus lands a headshot in Mass Effect 2, and yells out, “scoped and dropped!”, I can’t help but cheer him on. The deepest friendships in games are often forged through hours of fighting with a companion at your side. They’re those friends I would virtually die for without a second thought, like Mass Effect’s Tali’Zorah nar Rayya, BioShock Infinite’s Elizabeth, or Titanfall 2’s BT-7274. I think it’s safe to say I’ve made a lot of friends through video games - not “real” friends for the most part, but ones I like to call NPF’s (Non-Player Friends).
